Devils Lake, World Tourism Day, and the Happy Traveler

Over the decades, tourism has experienced continued growth, to become one of the fastest-growing economic sectors in the world. ‎Modern tourism is closely linked to development and the number ‎of destinations is only growing. Today, tourism has been one of the critical drivers amongst the industries that have helped socio-economic progress across regions and countries of the world. 

Tourism is vital for the success of many economies around the world. There are several benefits of tourism. For one, it boosts the economy's revenue, develops the country's infrastructure, and plants a sense of cultural exchange between foreigners and citizens. Secondly, the number of jobs created by tourism in many different areas is significant. These jobs are not only a part of the tourism sector but may also include the agricultural sector, communication sector, health sector, and educational sector. Many tourists travel to experience the hosting destination’s culture, different traditions, and gastronomy. This is very profitable for local restaurants, shopping centers, and stores.

September 27: World Tourism Day

Tourism is an excellent opportunity for foreigners to learn about a new culture and creates many opportunities for local citizens. It allows young entrepreneurs to establish new products and services that would not be sustainable for the local population of residents alone. Moreover, residents experience the benefits of tourism occurring in their own country.

Since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization has celebrated World Tourism Day as international observance on September 27. This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted.  The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political, and economic values worldwide.

The largest natural body of water in North Dakota is home to large numbers of walleye, northern pike, and white bass and is known as the "Perch Capital of the World."
