Most entrepreneurs will tell you that starting their business was one thing. But when it comes to finding eager, hard-working, and reliable employees? That’s another story!

These days, it’s challenging to find a workforce that’s ready and willing to roll up its sleeves and get to work. But those words describe the skilled individuals of Devils Lake.

As we tip our hats to September’s Workforce Development Month, we at Forward Devils Lake Economic Development (FDLED) want to tell you more about how our area talent could be the secret to your business’s success!

A Vast Knowledge

Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau found that over 90% of our residents have a high school education or higher, with 25% possessing at least a bachelor's degree.

The area is rich with continuing education opportunities, thanks to institutions such as Lake Area Career and Technology Center and Lake Region State College. As a result, our employees possess a vast institutional knowledge in areas like nursing, automotive technology, manufacturing, and agriculture.

Some of the major employers that have benefited from that skill set include Altru Clinic, Butler Machinery, Gessner Iron Works, Sioux Manufacturing, Devils Lake School District, and more!

And while the Devils Lake area is home to approximately 7,500 potential employees to draw from, the greater workshed of Ramsey County and beyond encompasses nearly 30,000, enabling our workforce to suit businesses of all sizes.

Recruitment and Retention

North Dakota also offers several resources for workforce training and development.

This includes the “20 by 20” Skilled Workforce Recruitment and Retention Program. It was designed to work in collaboration with local and regional businesses to help encourage and recruit high school students to consider a career in a skilled and technical program.

But it doesn’t stop there! Because we don’t just want to train the next “Toolbelt Generation,” we want them to consider putting down roots in Devils Lake.

To that end, if a student commits to coming back to the region after graduating from an approved one or two-year technical college program and works for a local employer for three years, FDLED and partnering businesses will reimburse the student for up to 80% of the cost of annual tuition, room, and meals.

For more details about this program, please call FDLED Executive Director Brady Ash at 701-662-4933 or send him an email.
